This week on The Sound Kitchen, you’ll hear a flashback show – a program that aired in August 2013. Listener AKM Nuruzzaman from Rajshahi, Bangladesh reads his Community Hero essay, and shares his favourite music with you. Just click on the arrow in the photo and enjoy!

Hello everyone!
Welcome to The Sound Kitchen. You can catch the programme on-the-air every Saturday at 6:15, 7:15, 14:45 and 16:45 universal time. You’ll hear the winner’s names announced and the week’s quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you have grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and tune in every Saturday.
For our DX enthusiast friends: Our shortwave frequency is 9675 kHz on the 31m band, from 06.00 to 07.00 UT every day. We’ve had reception reports from Algeria, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Columbia, Cuba, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Russia, Sierra Leone, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and the US, and although the frequency is “aimed” (or however that works) towards the African continent, give it a try. You never know … and be sure and send us your reception reports. Maybe we can get more time, which would be wonderful.
You can also hear our programs on WRMI (http://www.wrmi.net/) and WRN (http://www.wrn.org/listeners/). These broadcasters diffuse our programs out of the goodness of their hearts, but unless you tell us how you heard us, we have no way of knowing … so do write and tell us how you listen to us.

Imagine that we're creating a time capsule to leave for future generations to open up years later. This time capsule will be a significant source of data for future generations to know about our time, our generation, our culture, our way of life.
What would you leave in this time capsule? It could be anything! Something personal that would let the future people know of your existence. Or it could be something general for the future to know about our way of life.
Let us know your piece that you would contribute and we'll share your answers on Friday's edition of K-Pop Connection.
Thanks guy and hope you all had a happy lunar new year! See you guys on air! :)

Let's all congratulate our last week's Y2C winner: Meron Wondimu. Please email us your mailing address to kpop@kbs.co.kr so we can send out your prize. Be sure to include in the subject line that you are the Y2C winner for January 20th.
For this week...let's all about one of the best things in the world...LAUGHTER!
There's a quote floating around the internet (I don't know if it's really true...)...
Babies laugh around 300 times a day whereas adults laugh less than 20 times a day.

Isn't that SAD??? Raising a baby myself, I must say my son laughs at almost anything and everything. You can do the same funny thing ten times in a row and he laughs just as hard the tenth time as he did the first time. Babies are so infectious! With age though, we lose that purity and tend to laugh less and less at stuff that we once found hilarious.
So what about you?
How many times a day do you think you laugh? Like REALLY laugh outloud. When's the last time you laughed til you couldn't breathe or til you teared up? Do you remember the reason for your crazy fit of laughter?
Let us know!!
Can't wait to share all your answers on our Friday edition of K-Pop Connection!

This week’s quiz: On 17 December, I asked you a very different kind of question: you were to send me your five favourite words in English. They didn’t have to be hard or unusual words, or have special meaning - just words you like the sound of. After all, as I told you, my favorite word in French is the word for sidewalk: “trottoir”. I think it is funny and I love to say it. Anyway, as there is no right answer for the question, I put all your responses in a hat and pulled out five. And here are the lucky winners:
• Sanusi Isah Dankaba from Nasarawa State, Nigeria, with “forklift”, “cheesy”, “literally”, “humble bee”, and “lovely”.
N.B. “Humble bee” is the old word for “bumble bee” – it changed from “humble” to “bumble” in the early 20th century. Darwin, for example, wrote about the “humble” bee, not the “bumble” bee.
• A. K. M. Nuruzzaman, the president of the RFI Amour Fan Club in Rajshahi, Bangladesh, with “brood”, “chatoyant”, “comely”, “efflorescence” and “halcyon”;
• RFI Club member Mohammad Akhsan from Dhaka, Bangladesh, with “wonder”, “daughter”, “weather”, “stating” and “potato”;
• Saidul Islam, a member of the Nilshagor RFI Fan Club in Nilphamari, Bangladesh, with “evening”, “window”, “sea”, “drink” and “tree”;
• Mrs C O Agboola from Ekiti State, Nigeria, with “reconciliation”, “prestige”, ”love”, “integrity” and “reputation”.
Congratulations winners!
This week’s question ... you'll have to listen to the show to participate. You have until 27 February to enter this week's quiz. The winners will be announced on the 3 March program. This week on The Sound Kitchen, you’ll hear the answer to the quiz about the presidential polls in The Gambia. There’s an invitation to “pay it forward”, some great music, and of course … the quiz. Just click on the arrow in the photo and enjoy!

A hearty welcome to three new RFI Listeners Club members! Kristopher Arens of Creswell, Oregon in the US, Abdikadir Elmi from Nairobi, Kenya, and Rachid Dahmani from M'sila, Algeria. Welcome gentlemen!
This week’s quiz: On 10 December, I asked you a question about the presidential polls in The Gambia, where the country’s voters ousted their strongman president of 22 years - a man who took control of the country in a 1994 military coup. You were to send in the name of The Gambia’s president- elect, and the name of the outgoing president.
The answer is: A lot has changed since I asked you that question: initially, the incumbent president conceded defeat. A week later, he changed his mind, and decided to contest the election results; security forces took over the headquarters of the Independent Electoral Commission shortly thereafter, and the head of the Electoral Commission fled the country. Three private radio stations have been taken off air, the West African regional bloc, Ecowas, has been in conference with the incumbent president urging him to step down …it’s a mess. No telling what will happen next.
But the correct answer to my question when I asked it is: the president – elect is Adama Barrow of the United Democratic Party (he won 43.29 percent of the vote) and the incumbent is Yahya Jammeh of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction party – a party which was formed two years after Jammeh’s rise to power from the 1994 military coup d’état. Jammeh won 39.64 percent of the votes.
The winners are: Three from The Gambia: Fansu Bolong Janneh from Banjul, and Ramatouli Bah and William Joiner, both from Serrekunda. Also on the list of winners this week: Muhammad Shamim, the president of the RFI Golden Eagles Club in Keralam, India, and Zenon Teles, an RFI Listeners Club member, and the president of the Christian- Marxist-Leninist-Maoist Association of Listening DX-ers in Goa, India.
Congratulations winners!
This week’s question ... you'll have to listen to the show to participate. You have until 20 February to enter this week's quiz. The winners will be announced on the 25 February program. 6th World Radio Day: 13 February, 2017

Radio is You!
UNESCO invites all radio stations and supporting organisations to join us for World Radio Day 2017, a chance to celebrate radio and how it helps shape our lives!
Radio is still the most dynamic, reactive and engaging medium there is, adapting to 21st century changes and offering new ways to interact and participate. Where social media and audience fragmentation can put us in media bubbles of like-minded people, radio is uniquely positioned to bring communities together and foster positive dialogue for change.
By listening to its audiences and responding to their needs, radio provides the diversity of views and voices needed to address the challenges we all face.
Radio informs us and transforms us, through entertainment, information and audience participation. Having a radio means you are never alone – you always have a friend in radio.

Hey all! Congrats to last week's Y2C winner: Neetika Aggarwal. Please email us your mailing address to kpop@kbs.co.kr so we can send out your prize. Be sure to include in the subject line that you are the Y2C winner for January 13th, 2017.
Now on to this week's question...
What was the last movie that made you cry?
I was thinking about this while watching the drama "Legend of the Blue Sea". Jeon Ji-hyun tries to watch sad movies so she can cry (because her tears turn into pearls and can be sold for money). I was thinking, if I could have that same power, what movie would I watch?
So what was the last movie you watched where you cried. Was it just tears welling up? Falling down? Wailing and balling your eyes out?
Let us know!
And have a great week. :)

For this week's Y2C question...
What is one thing that nobody knows about you?
I thought it would be interesting to get to know everyone in our K-Pop Connection family a little better. So let's share some "secret" details. It doesn't haven't to be something huge or juicy...but any random thing that most people don't know about you. For example, maybe you have a birthmark somewhere. Or you sucked your thumb until you were in the fifth grade. Or you hate carrots.
Share some random facts about yourself and we'll read them on air to get to know our listeners better!
Have a safe and fun week everyone! Hope you're all staying on track with your new year's resolutions. :)

This week’s quiz: On 3 December, I asked you a question about a Tunisian organization called Aswat Nissa, which you heard on our 25 November International Report. Aswat Nissa trains women in political skills – debating, writing budgets, how to canvass for votes – through a series of year-long, once a month workshops. In the report, journalist Don Duncan tells us how many women are enrolled in this year’s workshops, and that was the question: how many women are enrolled in this year’s Aswat Nissa workshops in Tunis?
The answer is: 40. There are 40 women currently training at Aswat Nissa.

That week, members of France’s conservative party Les Républicans (formerly the UMP) cast their votes to choose their candidate for the 2017 presidential polls. You were to write in with the names of the two candidates who won the most votes in that first round of voting and qualified to run for the second round on 27 November. The answer is: François Fillion, with 44 percent, and Alain Juppé, with 28.5 percent. As you probably know, voters decided on François Fillion in the second round.
